Osteopathy and Chiropractic are systems of manual medicine which aim to improve health, function and well-being by removal of the mechanical dysfunctions and movement restrictions which are part of illness and poor function, and which can hinder a return to good health.
These mechanical restrictions make your body mechanically and physiologically inefficient - you are sore and always tired, with reduced quality of both your activity and your rest, and you have a drastically reduced enjoyment of life.
Osteopathy was developed in the 19th Century in the United States, by Andrew Taylor Still, and Chiropractic soon after, but in reality, this type of therapy is as old as civilisation. Previously it was known as bone setting or 'shaping' - in fact, ancient Arab treatises and the Hippocratic texts of 400 BC describe joint mobilisation as a standard part of medical care.
Joint mobilisation and physical therapy, with an aim to restore general health, has always been an integral part of medical care throughout history and in all cultures.
The first Australian osteopaths were Florence McGeorge and Edgar Culley, both 1904 graduates of the American School of Osteopathy. Both practised in Melbourne. Now, Australian osteopaths must complete a full 5 year course of study at an accredited University.
